WEP Opens Applications for Environmental Justice and Human Rights Bootcamp in South-South Nigeria

The Women Environmental Programme (WEP) has opened applications for organisations in South-South Nigeria to participate in a two-day Environmental Justice and Human Rights Bootcamp.

According to the organisation, the programme is aimed at equipping young people, especially young women, with practical knowledge and advocacy skills to promote environmental justice and human rights within their communities.

WEP said interested and eligible organisations are expected to nominate one participant for the training programme.

The organisation noted that the bootcamp will provide participants with tools needed to understand environmental challenges, advocate for sustainable policies, and engage communities on environmental and human rights issues.

What participants will gain

Selected participants will receive training on environmental justice and how it connects with human rights issues affecting communities.

According to WEP, the programme will also expose participants to practical advocacy methods and grassroots mobilisation strategies.

Benefits of the bootcamp include:

  • Training on environmental justice and human rights
  • Practical advocacy and campaigning skills
  • Knowledge on analysing local and global environmental challenges
  • Networking opportunities with experts and fellow advocates
  • Exposure to community-based environmental engagement strategies

The organisation explained that the training is designed to strengthen youth participation in environmental governance and community advocacy efforts across the South-South region.

Who can apply

WEP said only organisations that meet the stated eligibility requirements will be considered.

Eligible organisations must:

  • Be registered and based in South-South Nigeria
  • Be actively involved in environmental or human rights issues, or show strong interest in the areas
  • Be willing to nominate a committed participant for the programme

The organisation added that young women and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to participate as part of its commitment to inclusivity and equal representation in leadership and advocacy.

Focus on young women and inclusion

According to WEP, the bootcamp places strong emphasis on empowering young women to become environmental justice advocates in their communities.

The organisation said many environmental and human rights issues disproportionately affect women and vulnerable groups, making inclusive participation important for sustainable change.

WEP also noted that encouraging the participation of persons with disabilities aligns with broader efforts to promote equal access to leadership opportunities and community engagement.

The organisation stated that only successful applicants will be contacted after the review process.
