The global event Wikimania is marking its 20th anniversary, and for the first time, it’s heading to East Africa. The celebration will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, and participants from around the world are invited to join—whether in person or online. This milestone commemorates two decades of bringing together contributors, enthusiasts, and advocates who work to support free knowledge and Wikimedia’s global mission.
To encourage diverse attendance, the Core Organizing Team has announced scholarship opportunities for those interested in joining the conference in Nairobi. The scholarships aim to cover travel, accommodation, and registration fees, ensuring that financial barriers don’t prevent dedicated Wikimedians from attending. Scholarships are open now, and applications must be submitted by December 8, 2024.
The Organizing Team has emphasized the need for early applications, hoping to streamline travel logistics and make the experience as smooth as possible for accepted applicants.
Conference Theme and Program Highlights
The theme for Wikimania 2025 is “Wikimania@20: Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability.” This theme celebrates the achievements of the Wikimedia community while encouraging discussions around long-term goals for inclusivity, sustainability, and the continued impact of Wikimedia projects. The event will run from August 6-9, 2025 with pre-conference activities scheduled for August 5.
East African Wikimedians are especially encouraged to participate, and there will be numerous opportunities for skill-sharing and regional collaboration. The venue and program details will be released soon, with more information expected to be shared in the coming months.
How to Apply for the Scholarship
Applicants for the scholarship should focus on demonstrating their active role in the Wikimedia community. Emphasis will be placed on contributions that promote sustainability, resilience, and impactful work within the Wikimedia movement. Contributions can include online or offline activities, and applicants are advised to provide links or references to substantiate their involvement.
Priority will be given to Wikimedians from East Africa and those with extended user rights within the community. However, participants from around the world are welcome to apply.
Volunteering Requirement for Scholars
As in past years, scholarship recipients will be asked to volunteer 4-6 hours during the conference, though they can opt for additional volunteer hours if interested. All scholarship recipients will be covered by Wikimedia Foundation’s Travel Insurance Policy, ensuring a safe and supported experience.
Those who apply will be notified of their application status in March 2025. This year’s event promises to be an enriching experience for Wikimedians worldwide, offering an opportunity to build connections, share knowledge, and celebrate two decades of Wikimedia’s mission to make knowledge freely accessible to all.
Whether you plan to attend in person or online, Wikimania 2025 in Nairobi is set to be a remarkable event, honoring the journey of free knowledge and the community that sustains it.
